The headlines read “ Zambia banned over Viagra use”. But as the African Authority for Refugees (AARC) (see, ) continues to push for the suspension of some aid-funded clinics in the region, it was clear that the country was no longer in the lurch. The African Union has been trying to stop the sale of the medicine to African Union members since 2014. The drug is now only available to the AAR’s health programme in Zambia.
AARC has now moved to suspend some of the most important aid-funded clinics in Zambia – including theRefugee Hospital for Children (RoC) and the Uganda Medical Centre (WMC), which provide a vital care to about 15,000 children, as well as to provide emergency medical services to about 120,000. The African Union (AU) says it would like to see the AAR stop the sale of Viagra, as it fears it could undermine the health of those it offers to the region’s children.
To counter the continued supply of the medicine to the region’s children, the AAR has ordered that the medicines be stored outside the country and the drug be stopped at the border with Zimbabwe. The new decision to keep the medicine in the country could put pressure on African Union to intervene and force the drug company to resubmit the supply. The medicine is now available to the AAR for export.
AARC’s decision to suspend the medicine was welcomed by President Donald Trump and other African leaders. In his first term as African leader, Mr. Trump said he wanted to see “more and more” the medicine to Africa. However, the decision to suspend the medicine was welcomed by some doctors who say the medicine is not safe for them to take. Mabum of the Zambian AIDS Society, an HIV and AIDS society, told: “It is a very good step for Zambians to be able to access this medicine and it is an important step to stop the sale of the medicine. But the medicine is not available here in the country, and we cannot have this medicine available here in the country.”
